What is Chronic Insomnia, Really?
There are quite a few different sleep deprivation conditions that a person can develop, but insomnia is certainly one of the most common.
Most people have at least a basic idea as to what insomnia is, but you need to understand that chronic insomnia is something different altogether. Chronic insomnia is much more serious than your standard, run of the mill insomnia, because it refers to insomnia conditions that will not go away.
Abnormal levels of certain brain chemicals have actually been observed in some of the people who suffer from chronic insomnia, and this includes melatonin. This is the hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland, and there are also various stress hormones that have been found to cause chronic insomnia.
Even the growth hormone has shown to be a possible cause of this condition, and so you will want to get in to see your doctor to find out more about this and have tests performed so that they can decide whether or not you are suffering from this extreme form of insomnia.
Treatment
Anyone who suffers from chronic insomnia is going to want to find an effective treatment as soon as possible. Not only is it important to get a chronic insomnia treatment as soon as possible just so that you can feel better, but even more importantly because this is a condition which, if left untreated, can actually cause much more serious health conditions to develop.
For treatment, your doctor will most likely start off with milder suggestions, such as to try drinking a cup of tea at night or a soothing bath. They will want you to try the simpler things first to see if these are not enough, and then after, if they are not, move on to more serious measures.
If you find that the natural remedies and ideas are not working for your insomnia, they may recommend that you start taking some sleeping pills or other type of medication. Remember that no matter what medication they decide to put you on, it will probably not start showing results until at least a few weeks later, typically even up to six weeks.
This is important to know because too many people do not see the results that they are looking for right away, think the medication is not working, and just stop taking it. You may even actually feel worse at first when you start taking medication, but it will show results in a few weeks if you just give it some time.
